  abstract = {This article explores the political theology of Athanasius' ‘Life of Antony’. It argues that the work is profoundly concerned with the relationship between the Church and the empire, which it treats as a component of the relationship between the Church and the fallen world order. Athanasius explores this issue through Antony, striving to live as a citizen of heaven within the fallen world. Athanasius sees allegiance to earthly authority as problematising allegiance to the heavenly kingdom, which is bound up with a concern for the Christian's identity: the Christian must understand himself and the world in relation to the kingdom of heaven, rather than the earthly kingdom.},

	doi = {10.1163/187124110X542428},
	abstract = {This article gives a brief overview of the reception of Athanasius in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Roman Catholic theology. Besides papal documents, mainly German theologians are discussed. First, Johann Adam Möhler's Athanasius der Grosse (1827) is analyzed. Möhler was convinced that Athanasius was of great importance for modern society. However, Möhler's attempt to give Athanasius a prominent position in contemporary theology seemed to fail. Although Athanasius is not absent in nineteenth-century dogmatic compendia, nor in papal documents of the last two centuries and many dogmatics of the twentieth century, his quantitative reception is rather poor, especially in comparison to Augustine. The dogmatic compendia and Neo-Thomistic theology did not have an interest in a historical interpretation of Athanasius and Thomas, himself, hardly referred to Athanasius. Moreover, the Trinitarian and Christological dogmas were not really contested. This changed in twentieth-century theology, because of a new understanding of historical development and the rise of phenomenology and existentialism. The doctrines of the Trinity and Christology were reinterpreted from the perspective of salvation history (Heilsgeschichte). Many theologians wanted to correct the anti-Arian tendency, stressing that Christ was truly God and truly man. Athanasius overlooked Christ's humanity and the Alexandrian Logos-Sarx-Christology needed the complementation of the Antiochene Logos-Antropos-Christology. Nevertheless, Athanasius's has received great formal authority within Roman Catholicism. He is a Saint and honored as doctor ecclesiae, because of his impact on Christian doctrine and the development of monasticism.},

He turns to the language of bodily creation and kinship rather than contemplation to express the relationship between Christ and Christians. For Athanasius, evil makes it impossible for humans to contemplate the divine Word by which they were created. Therefore, the Word embodied a new humanity in Christ. The Holy Spirit enables Christians to participate in Christ, becoming thereby part of a new humanity and children of God.},

	abstract = {This paper discusses aspects of the reception of Athanasius in the Syriac-speaking churches. On the basis of a survey of the Syriac translations of Athanasius and references to him by a number of authors, it is argued that he was considered a very important Father by the Syriac Orthodox, the Melkites, as well as the East Syrians, even though most if not all of the translations were made by the Syriac Orthodox. His status was based not only on the fact that especially in matters of Christology he was considered the epitome of Orthodoxy by all parties, but also on the fact that his ascetic writings formed a major source of inspiration to monks. With the help of five examples the importance of the Syriac tradition for the establishment of critical texts of Athanasius's writings is shown here to be considerable, even though there are very many issues and problems connected with the translations.},

The political-ecclesial situation of Alexandria in the years 373-378 (circa) appears to be that described in the two letters and the only one possible, in my opinion, that corresponds to their tone and content. Their different theological backgrounds resulted in different judgements on his expositions on the Trinity. Mosheim's evaluation of Athanasius is positive, but he thinks Athanasius speculates too much about the mystery of the Trinity, which cannot be understood by reason. Baur considers his theology to reflect a crucial moment within the development of Christian thought, a moment that shows the internal dynamics of this development. Harnack is of the opinion that Christians owe it to Athanasius that Christian faith did not end up as moralism and cosmology. He also thinks that in Athanasius'views on Christ we can hardly find anything of the Jesus of the gospels.},

	abstract = {This article considers the ideas of Athanasius of Alexandria with regard to the relation between creation and recreation. Attention is given to the intention of his apologetic, and internally coherent, work Contra Gentes / De Incarnatione Verbi. This work provides evidence of Athanasius's conviction that the Recreator is no other God than the Creator. In coherence with this fundamental ideas, Athanasius voices four manners of revelation, which are all analyzed in this article: the first manner of revelation appears in the fact that man was created in God's image and likeness, as a result of which man is able to know God. The second manner of revelation is found in the harmony of creation. However, since his Fall, man did not respond to that in the right way either. The third manner is the revelation through the Holy Scriptures of the Jews, the Old Testament. According to Athanasius, these Scriptures were meant for all of mankind. The fourth and final manner of revelation to be discussed, is Athanasius's view of Incarnation.},

	abstract = {Shortly after his death, the influential fourth century bishop, Athanasius of Alexandria, was recognized for introducing the contemplative traditions of the Egyptian monks to the urban Christians of Alexandria and for bringing the desert monks into communion with the Alexandrian episcopacy. Athanasius accomplished this by quite intentionally bridging the distance (physical and spiritual) between desert and city. Over time, with his tireless effort, the daily spiritual practices of the monks became those of the urban Christian and the monks came increasingly under the sway of the Alexandrian episcopacy. As a consequence of his commitment to bringing the desert closer to the city, Athanasius thoroughly integrated ascetic practice into his theology and it proved to be a decisive component of his ecclesiastical politics. A letter Athanasius wrote to a certain Marcellinus provides valuable insight into the shape of Athanasius's spiritual program, its relationship to previous Hellenistic philosophical traditions, and, especially, the crucial function of the psalms in the reformation of the self.},

Two of these questions, "{\textgreater}Which extant linguistic tradition reflects the oldest reading?"{\textless} and "{\textgreater}Under what circumstances (and by whom) was the document written?"{\textless} can be better understood by examining the use of ethnic and religious identifiers in The Life. What the equivalent terms "{\textgreater}Greek"{\textless} and "{\textgreater}Egyptian"{\textless} mean in the different linguistic traditions and how they are used in the context of the narrative can be used to determine if the work has been translated to a different cultural setting in a different language. Having determined the oldest extant form of the work (the Greek version), I then offer a synthesis which reconstructs how these oldest readings were aimed at a monastic community in the vicinity of Alexandria by the most renowned bishop of that city, Athanasius, and then translated and disseminated around the empire.},

	abstract = {This article considers how Athanasius of Alexandria was read by Reformed Protestants of the early modern period. Attention is given to anthologies of patristic material, to John Calvin, Reiner Bachoff (Bachofius), and his Catechesis religionis christianae (1603), Abraham Scultetus's Medulla theologiae patrum (1606), and Amandus Polanus of Polansdorf 's Symphonia catholica (1607, 1612). The latter three works provide evidence of a direct acquaintance with Athanasius's writings. Though in comparison with other patristic quotations the Athanasian citations contained in them are in number rather limited, they do come from a broad range of Athanasius's writings. The references are further not limited to Christology, but deal with a variety of themes relevant to Reformed theology.},

	abstract = {This article argues that in the Vita Antonii Athanasius's realistic colouring of some commonplaces indicates that more justice has been done to Anthony's personality, as Athanasius experienced it, than the emphasis on his indebtedness to classical literature suggests. The central question in this article is: how does Athanasius show himself to be a mystagogue in his Vita Antonii? It is shown that the monastic formation process, by which Athanasius represents Anthony's life, comprehends five stages. At the first two stages the fear of God's judgement is the driving and purifying force in the ordo vitae. In the third and fourth stages, Athanasius formulates the first aim of his mystagogy: the restoration of Adam's original state of the soul, marked by imperturbability and serenity. During the fifth and last stage, however, the teacher is faithful to the directives that were taught to him at the very beginning of his monastic life. Now, however, ascesis is not inspired by the fear of the Lord but merely by the love of Christ.},

	abstract = {This article deals with the reception of Athanasius in systematic theology. The first section focuses on quantitative data. It turns out that Athanasius, though often hailed as one of the greatest Church fathers, is not quoted very frequently when compared e.g. with Augustine. Major systematic works do not refer to him at all, or scarcely. The second part directs its attention to the content of the reception. The core of Athanasius's importance is found in his Christology: God became human so that humans become God. Soteriology and Christology are one and the same and this can also get the face of pneumatology: participation in the Spirit of God. Other aspects of Athanasius work whereto is referred, are his list of canonical books and his view on theological epistemology. In the final section the author stresses once again the priority of Athanasius's interpretation of the homoousios over any other Christological model.},

	abstract = {Athanasius begins to defend Nicaea's ὁμοούσιος in the De decretis of ca. 353, pursuing two basic strategies. First, the term is defended as a necessary corollary of Nicaea's controversial phrase Greek 1, a phrase which appears to be more fundamental to Athanasius. Second, however, he defends both ὁμοούσιος and Greek 1 as necessary in order to preserve the sense of important scriptural terminologies that he takes to emphasize the Son's status as the Father's Wisdom and Word. ὁμοούσιος thus functions as a cipher for phrases that are what Richard Vaggione has termed “basic dogmatic statements.” In his account of Nicaea Athanasius also appears to draw on Eusebius of Caesarea's argument in his Epistula ad Caesarienses of 326. The skill with which he adopts and adapts Eusebius' arguments further demonstrates the subtlety with which doctrinal ciphers could be explored and deployed.},

	title = {A philological and theological analysis of the ancient Latin translations of the "Vita Antonii"},
	url = {http://fordham.bepress.com/dissertations/AAI3310418},
	abstract = {The two ancient Latin translations of the Vita Antonii were prepared within sixteen years after Athanasius, bishop of Alexandria, composed that text following the abba's death in 356. The elegantly literary Evagrian translation is extant in numerous medieval manuscripts, but the existence of the earlier anonymous translation was confirmed only in 1914, when a manuscript containing that translation was discovered in a Vatican archive. This study is based on a careful analysis of the minor, but tendentious, revisions that are included in these Latin texts and that reveal the character and the intentions of their translators. Although both translations were prepared during the third quarter of the fourth century, they represent divergent perspectives on Antony of Egypt and early monasticism, as well as on the theological issues of those decades. The anonymous translator, who most probably was one of the desert monks, emphasizes Antony's role as a monastic leader and amplifies Athanasius's demonology by associating the demons with the Arian heretics. In contrast, the Evagrian translation presents Antony as both a pillar of the triumphal Church and a model for all Christians because of his victories over the demons through the Cross of Christ and his pursuit of heavenly rewards. {\textasciicircum}},

	abstract = {The doctrine of creation out of nothing was conceptually sharpened as the Church Fathers engaged the cosmological views of their opponents. This article discusses the emergence of this doctrine in the second century, focusing on the polemic of Irenaeus against the Gnostics. For Irenaeus, creatio ex nihilo was already a part of the “rule of truth,” which provided a hermeneutical key to the scriptures. Irenaeus also used rational arguments to show that Gnostic cosmologies obscured, rather than explained the origins of the world. A different challenge arose in the fourth century, when Arius began to teach that the Son was created out of nothing, thereby treating the divine act of the generation of the Son analogously to the creating of the world. Athanasius of Alexandria introduced an important distinction by correlating the eternal generation of the Son with the divine essence and the creation of the world with the will of the Father.},

Based on comparison of vocabulary, imagery, and literary framing, contextualized against late-Roman Egyptian mortuary practices and beliefs, it will be shown that the vision recounted originates not with Palladius or Athanasius, but that both record, independently, an oral tradition originating with the monk Antony or his circle. It is probable that Palladius records faithfully a version that he learned from Cronius (or, Cronides), a longtime compatriot of Antony, and that Athanasius offers a subtly modified version. Athanasius’ version is distinguished by its lack of distinctively Egyptian elements, which are present in Palladius. Both theological and cultural explanations will be tentatively offered for this situation.},

	shorttitle = {Context, Context, Context},
	abstract = {This article examines Athanasius’ argument in his work Contra Arianos, focusing on the reasons for the order in which he addresses the biblical texts he considers. While the choice of which texts to discuss is dictated by the need to consider those texts that were evidently important in the Arians’ own exegetical arguments, the order in which Athanasius discusses them derives from his desire to begin with biblical texts that clearly describe the whole sweep of biblical redemption. Texts such as Philippians 2:5-11 and Hebrews 1-2 describe in some detail the movements of humiliation and exaltation which the Son undergoes as he becomes man, and thus these texts demonstrate the need to apply any given assertion about the Son either to his eternal existence as God or to his temporal existence as man. In such texts, the literary context-the subject of the passage itself-explicitly describes the broader redemptive context. As a result, these texts constitute the starting point from which to develop interpretive principles applicable to other biblical texts in which the redemptive context is not as obvious. The article concludes with reflection on the significance of Athanasius’ starting point: the story of redemption begins not with the Gospels or even with Genesis 1, but with the eternal relationship of Father to Son, a relationship we were created to share and redeemed that we might share it anew.},

The text has come down to us in 250 copies dating from the tenth to the nineteenth century and was translated from Greek into Arabic, Armenian, Church Slavonic, Ethiopic, Georgian and Latin. Although attributed to Athanasius of Alexandria († 373) by most of the manuscripts, in all probability it was written sometime during the seventh or eighth century. Within the framework of {DEBIDEM}, an {ERC} funded research project hosted at King’s College London, a critical edition of the Greek collection is being prepared for the Corpus Christianorum Series Graeca. In this article however, we focus on the surviving Church Slavonic material. Khaled Anatolios, Retrieving Nicaea: the Development and Meaning of Trinitarian Doctrine.   Grand Rapids, {MI}:  Baker Academic, 2011.  Pp. xviii, 322.  {ISBN} 9780801031328.  \$39.99.

Reviewed by Benjamin de Lee, University of California, Los Angeles (bendelee@ucla.edu)
Khaled Anatolios's historical study of Nicaea is a thorough overview of Trinitarian debates from the fourth to fifth centuries. Anatolios considers Augustine alongside two major Greek thinkers, Athanasius and Gregory of Nyssa, as well as providing a thorough background to the theological controversy which supposedly began with Arius and Alexander of Alexandria. With its careful and clear explanations, helpful chapter divisions and headings, and detailed footnotes, Retrieving Nicaea is a historical overview, an erudite scholarly study, and a useful work for both students and advanced scholars.
In the foreword, Brian Daley, after briefly surveying Trinitarian theology of the past few decades, somewhat misleadingly declares Anatolios's work to be not mere “intellectual history,” but “a work of profound theology.” However, theology was the intellectual history of this period, so such a statement sets up a false dichotomy. Anatolios himself in his Preface states that his aim is “to engage both historical and systematic theologians in a conversation about the enduring value of the historical development of trinitarian doctrine for its systematic exposition.” In his helpful introduction he gives a detailed plan of the book with a criticism of modern “trajectories” (conveniently reduced to three) in Trinitarian theology. Anatolios finds all three lacking, and aims to understand Christian Trinitarian doctrine in the sense that the original proponents understood it. With this approach, he follows similar recent works, like that of John Behr and Lewis Ayres, both of whom he mentions in footnotes and regards as having complementary approaches. Anatolios's apology that the book is not a history is somewhat over-stated: while he does not carefully trace and analyze political and historical events in the vein of David Brakke’s or Harold Drake's work, he does provide an intellectual history of the foundational doctrine of the Trinity.
The first chapter is a short background to “fourth-century Trinitarian Theology, History and Interpretation,” where he explains how he will analyze these theologians who are so far from us in time and thought: “My proposal is to distinguish between theologies that spoke of the unity of the Trinity as a unity of being and those that spoke of a unity of will.” (p. 30) This chapter is really a preface to chapter two, “Development of Trinitarian Doctrine,” which can become somewhat abstruse, if for no other reason than the topic itself. It is a thorough description of the immediate background to and the early stages of the Arian controversy. Those who have not read the major works on the subject may find themselves a bit lost, since Anatolios does not give a great deal of attention to figures like Origen or Theodore of Mopsuestia. He does to Asterius, a figure who is not usually given such a prominent position by other scholars, mainly because his work survives only in fragments.
The third chapter is devoted exclusively to Athanasius. While the chapter is at times repetitive, Athanasius is Anatolios's particular strength.1 The development of Athanasius’s thought is clearly presented in stages, so the repetitions are inevitable for the sake of clarity. Those interested can follow Anatolios's summaries without reading Athanasius's laborious prose. Still, at this stage, one wonders if anything new can be said about Athanasius, although Anatolios is not afraid to critique Athanasius's own reasoning and to attempt a fresh analysis that allows Athanasius to speak for himself. Anatolios provides more detailed studies of Athanasius in his earlier works.
The fourth chapter is devoted to Gregory of Nyssa. In many ways, this chapter is the most satisfying, perhaps because as Anatolios points out, Gregory of Nyssa has such an appeal to the modern/post-modern mindset. Anatolios's treatment of Against Eunomius is thorough (perhaps too thorough). Although Retrieving Nicaea is a solid introduction to a difficult subject, the frequent references to Basil of Caesarea in this chapter may leave the beginner who is not familiar with Basil somewhat at a loss and demonstrate the difficulty of analyzing any of the Cappadocians in isolation. Anatolios's description of Gregory’s doctrine of God, as “Three-personed Goodness” is especially clear. It is at this stage that Nicene Trinitarian theology comes together, and Anatolios's work reflects this synthesis.
Still, Gregory cannot be entirely saved by Anatolios's study. At times, Anatolios's efforts to rescue Gregory from being a Christian Platonist are not entirely convincing, and the defense that three persons in one nature (three hypostases sharing one ousia) remains open to criticism from strict monotheists (and needs a clear explanation in inter-faith dialogue, a contemporary context where this topic could arise). To the outsider or non- believer, Gregory’s theology does appear as three gods, and complaining that “the dialectic of apophatic and cataphatic elements . . . is so easy to distort, partly because the modern reception of them has been bedeviled by imprecise and sometimes misleading interpretive categories” (p. 229) gives the impression that Anatolios is floating up into the philosophical ether of abstraction, like Gregory himself. Gregory was and remains the philosopher’s theologian. I am not convinced Anatolios has saved him from that fate.
It is an interesting juxtaposition that the next chapter is on Augustine, who happily embraced the concreteness of his native Latin after rejecting neo-Platonism with its difficult Greek abstractions. Augustine does not usually get serious consideration in studies of Nicaea. Anatolios makes a convincing case that one should consider Augustine in this context, as he made a real effort to consider Nicene Trinitarian theology in a Latin context and with somewhat different concerns, in particular, the practical implications for the believer. This chapter stands as a particularly nice essay, and anyone teaching De Trinitate will be tempted to mine it for lecture notes or to have students read it.
The conclusion comes back to the title: retrieving Nicaea. Here Anatolios offers his vision of every aspect of modern theology which Nicaea should touch today, and it is here that he seems to most approach theology and to offer a case of relevance in modern theology for his study.
Anatolios's presentation is unusual, as most scholars would consider all the Cappadocians, not just Gregory of Nyssa (although Basil of Caesarea is frequently mentioned in the chapters on Athanasius and Gregory). The major figures are covered in detail while much of the intervening narrative of Trinitarian theology is not included. This method creates a paradoxical problem: it is a great introduction for the student new to the topic, since major figures, many of whose works are available in recent English translations, are adequately covered. At the same time, one must have sufficient knowledge to fill in all the gaps, because the more minor figures and the historical narrative are not thoroughly covered. It is tempting for the historian to find Anatolios’s study not sufficiently historical, but Anatolios warns in his introduction that he will not be offering a detailed historical background. Anatolios’s approach, despite its shortcomings, is a way to condense a very difficult and broad topic. Anatolios's clear and systematic presentation does so admirably well.

The first is the question of whether Athanasius and the council lied in claiming that the earlier Council of Sardica (343) had produced no creed. The article describes five possible scenarios explaining the historical evidence, four of which do not require the assumption that Athanasius lied. The second historical issue is the question of whether the council intended to be conciliatory or whether it sought to shore up the weak position of the Paulinists and to defeat the party of Meletius. In response to recent scholarly doubts about the motives of the council, the article repeats and augments a case made nearly a century ago by Armstrong, indicating that the bishops gathered at Alexandria acted in good faith and sought to be conciliatory. The article concludes by exploring the theological implications of the resolution it proposes to these historical issues: ‘Nicaea’ was not merely a document to be defended; it was a faith to be developed and explained.},

	abstract = {Athanasius’ catalogues of Arian views are notoriously difficult to interpret. Recent studies have recognized their polemical character and in particular their reporting of views not of Arius but of his supporters, such as Asterius. In his edition of the fragments of Asterius, Markus Vinzent has accordingly reassigned eight passages in these catalogues from Arius to Asterius. This study questions the methodological assumptions that underlie the retrieval of fragments of Asterius from the writings of Athanasius by means of such reassignments in lieu of external indications. It examines four of the passages that Vinzent attributed to Asterius and demonstrates that these texts are actually polemical reports and interpretations derived from genuine Asterian texts that Athanasius preserves in their original form elsewhere. Only the original, verbatim versions of these Asterian texts should be included in a collection of fragments, not the polemical, derivative versions of them, which make no contribution to our understanding of Asterius. Including such fragments risks skewing any recovery of the genuine theology of Asterius in an Athanasian direction.},

By dating the Syntagmation to about 322 and the Thalia to about 323 this study also gives qualified support to Rowan Williams's dating of some pre-Nicene events and discredits a recent attempt to position Asterius as having had a formative influence on Arius.},

This interpretation may be considered as plausible on three accounts : the compiler of the anti-Origenistic treatise had access to unusual sources; the quote from On the decrees of Nicaea is free of an error that, to judge by the edition of Opitz, affects the whole direct tradition; and towards the end of his life (373), Athanasius wrote another letter to Maximus the philosopher (CPG 2100). Even if this document turns out not to be genuine (Kannengiesser, 1987), it might still confirm the information transmitted in the anti-Origenistic florilegium: the exordium of On the decrees of Nicea and the Letter to Maximus show some similarities, suggesting that the author of the latter might have used the former, borrowing from it, among other elements, the name of the addressee of the pseudepigraphical document he intended to compose. The fact that On the decrees of Nicaea was directed to Maximus demonstrates that the correspondence between the two men straddled at least two decades. However, it does not supply any new evidence to answer the question of whether or not the correspondent of Athanasius was identical to the homonymic cynical philosopher who ruined the final years of Gregory of Nazianzus.}

In the effort to emphasize the divinity and uniqueness of Christ, the author of the Epistle to the Hebrews utilized three terms: καθαρός (10:22), δημιουργός (11:10), and δυνατός (11:19), all part of an extended passage treating God’s sacrifice and man’s resulting salvation. This theme and language crops up again in Athanasius of Alexandria, employed to defend and explain the incarnation of Christ, and then once more in Julian the Apostate, employed to appropriate characteristics of Christ for his pagan Christ-parallel of Heracles.},

The philological significance of this version is here discussed with some examples of variants (including a new paragraph of the text, probably omitted in the whole Greek tradition because of haplography in the archetype). This roll opens also many questions about issues such as communication of the patriarchate of Alexandria in the fourth century with the rest of Christian Egypt, the use of this particular format of manuscript, the translation of official documents.}

The Orations contain extensive references to the Christian Scriptures and are steeped in rhetoric. The use of Scripture and polemical rhetoric against Athanasius' theological opponents, the Arians, is intricately interwoven. This monograph offers a rhetorical analysis of the Orations against the Arians to demonstrate the interplay of scriptural reasoning and polemic in Athanasius' work. In this way, Boezelman's study provides a fresh perspective on the reception of John's Gospel in the fourth century"--},
